What else do you do during a long weekend other than get away for a few days?! BHW and I have been trying to get to Boston for 3 years now and we finally did! A good friend from work, JMC, grew up in Boston and offered to show us around his old stomping grounds. We drove through the night yesterday and got into town at around 2AM. The Little Cesar's pizza we got for the 6 hour trip was gone before we even got on the highway. I was in the backseat crammed between any and every snack imaginable. I'm certain we had more bags of snacks than clothes/toiletries. Thankfully the guys did the driving and I snoozed in the backseat while they sang loudly.. and terribly.. to various artists, including Taylor Swift. I wish I would have gotten a video of that, I could have used it to torture people. When we got to JMC's parents house, we all immediately crashed. This is where I would tell you about what their house looks like but I was basically sleep walking into the place. I dropped my bags and crashed for the night.. er.. morning.
Our morning started a little early, seeing as we got into town so late, but we wanted to make the most of our short time here! BHW woke up before JMC and I to pick up BHW's childhood best friend, MACE, from the airport. MACE was in town for a work conference that just so happened to be the same time that we were in town! Bonus points! JMC and I walked down the street to grab a coffee while we were waiting for them to get back. We went to Simons, it was a hip little coffee shop packed with people on their apple laptops drinking cortados. Everyone in there either had a beard or glasses.. mostly both though. I got a mocha and a bagel, it hit the spot and gave me a kick start to the morning! Once BHW and MACE got back from the airport, we all piled in the car and drove to the Sam Adams Brewery for a tour. Our trip will end up being beer themed, I have no doubt about that. Sitting next to BHW on the way to the brewery was like riding in the backseat of a car that's headed for the coolest amusement park in town. He wouldn't sit still! BHW occupied himself by reading.. out loud.. an article from his beer magazine that was about Boston. I think beer is all that goes through this guy's head! The tour was fairly standard.. I've been to so many tours I could probably lead them with no issue, but the tasting at the end was really nice! We got to drink beer, duh, but the guide did a step by step tasting which was probably helpful for the less beer savvy folks on the tour. After the tour we grabbed a bite to eat at Doyles Cafe. If we showed our brewery ticket we got a free Sam Adams pint glass when you bought a beer, just one more glass to add to BHW's collection!
After the tour and lunch we were in need of some rest. We didn't get much sleep the night before so we told ourselves it was ok. Once we had a little nap, our energy was back up for the rest of the evening. MACE went to a Red Sox game with his friend, JMC went out to dinner with his brother, and BHW and I went out for a little stroll to find something to eat. We ended up walking through Harvard which was beautiful. So much brick! And gorgeous old trees! The Charles river was right next to campus so we went down there to walk for a bit. It was the perfect evening for a walk outside! Once we had walked up an appetite, we met JMC and his brother. They had already eaten but they got a drink and hung out with us while we got a quick bite to eat.
